Kiana Ratay; passionate musician, educator, and lifelong learner.
About Me: From Student to Educator
Music has always been my passion. My musical journey began at a very young age with baby music classes, church choir, and lessons in piano and, later, French Horn. My parents were my biggest supporters, empowering me to join every ensemble and program. In high school, I played in numerous bands, orchestras, and choirs, including the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, and served as Head Drum Major for the Brookfield Central High School Marching Band. I studied under Kathryn Krubsack and Darcy Hamlin.
I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance (French Horn) and a Minor in Business from DePaul University in Chicago, graduating Cum Laude on a merit scholarship. While there, I had the honor of studying with James Smelser, Oto Carillo, and Neil Kimel.
Focus on Education
After graduation, I was accepted into the Graduate Music Performance program at the University of Miami as a Henry Mancini Orchestra Fellow and Frost Band of the Hour-Athletic Band Teaching Assistant. After one year, I switched my focus from Performance to the Master of Music Education plus Certification program to gain formal training in pedagogy. I had an amazing two years working for the Frost Band of the Hour as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, learning under Dr. Craig McKenzie, Professor Jay C. Rees, Professor Doug McCullough, and Dr. Sheldon McLean. I am currently completing my Teaching Internship at Miami Arts Studio under Erich and Steve Rivero.
Teaching Philosophy
Throughout my entire musical journey, I was fortunate to have incredibly knowledgeable and supportive teachers who taught me invaluable musical and life lessons. As an educator, I embrace the different learning styles of every individual, striving to instill musical excellence, practical discipline, and lasting confidence that extends far beyond the rehearsal room.
